Some thoughts and discussions from me.

Hey…does this guacamole look funny to you?

Well that’s because it’s supercharged! It’s chock full of supernutrients from spirulina!

Today’s post is all about the superfood, spirulina-  what the heck it is, the benefits of spirulina, and how to make some kickass guacamole out of it. And oh hey, just a heads up, I want to let you all know up front that I received this Nutrex spirulina for a Fitfluential campaign, and the following post is sponsored by Fitfluential LLC on behalf of Nutrex Hawaii.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about this deep aqua blue algae that turns anything it comes into contact with a gorgeous, deep hue of blue-green. Like my oatmeal!

One morning last week, I mixed a teaspoon of spirulina into my oatmeal, and it turned it green!

Not to worry, spirulina isn’t anything to be scared of; it’s actually quite impressive.

Like I mentioned above, Spirulina is an algae, which were one of the first plants to grow on Earth. It’s easily digestible because it doesn’t have a nucleus and its cell walls are soft. This particular spirulina from Nutrex PureHawaiian is, as the name suggests, from the deep oceans in Hawaii – with the highest nutritional content in the world! Spirulina is the most nutritious, concentrated food out there with an infinite amount of nutritional benefits:

  • High protein content (it’s 2/3 protein!)
  • Great source of the hard to come by vitamin K’s
  • High in Vitamin A, B12, iron, manganese, and chromium
  • Supports blood sugar regulation, blood pressure, cholesterol
  • Boosts energy levels
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Is chock full of beta-carotene

And lots, lots more, but we can only take so many bullet points. But the benefits of spirulina don’t stop at humans – veterinarians actually prescribe Spirulina to pets to aid in recovery, increase stamina, and ease stiffness. Show dogs are also known to eat it, as its said to help pets develop thick coats!

As for the taste: it’s got sort of an umami taste to it, so while I did stir it into my oatmeal, I much prefer it in savory dishes. This guacamole has so many flavors that the spirulina melds much better into the savory flavors of the guacamole. I just used my basic, go-to recipe, and added 2 tbsp. of guacamole

IMG_0115

3 avocados

juice of 1/2 lemon

juice of 1/2 lime

1 tbsp. hot sauce

1/2 tsp. sea salt

1/4 tsp. garlic salt

1/4 tsp. cumin

1/2 tsp. chili powder

1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper

1/2 tsp. pepper

1 tsp. dried cilantro

2 tbsp. Nutrex PureHawaiian Spirulina Pacifica

3 tbsp. tomato, chopped

3 tbsp. onion, chopped

Smash the three avocados with a fork, and then add all of the ingredients except for the tomato and onion. Mix together well. Next, stir in the tomato and onion. Eat with carrots, celery, bell peppers, tortilla chips, or pitas!

Although the powdered Spirulina is good in savory dishes, I actually prefer the tablets.

You can just take them with water, and if you take them daily, it makes it easier than mixing it into a smoothie or meal every day. (although the guac is pretty fun Smile)

Lastly, Nutrex Hawaii sent along a bottle of BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin. If you’re thinking what the H is that?! you’re not alone. I had no idea what it was, either!

Astaxanthin is an ingredient found in the muscles in salmon, and it’s also found in certain plants and microalgae. It’s an antioxidant that’s incredibly high in Vitamin C, CoQ10, Green Tea Catechins, and Vitamin E. Astaxanthin also provides support to the brain, eyes, and central nervous system.

Nutrex Hawaii only cultivates high quality microalgae. Actually, the founder researched microalgae, how to cultivate it into a consumable form, and where the best place in the world to do that would be before settling on the Kona Coast of Hawaii. Here’s what the microalgae farm there looks like from an aerial view.

Pretty insane.
