Protein Powders, Vitamins, Supplements

My favorite supplements and why/when I take them.

On average, I probably have about 1 serving of protein powder every other day. It comes in various forms for various reasons. I mostly buy protein powder in vanilla, just because it’s easily adaptable to other flavors if I want to put it in baked goods or change the flavor in a smoothie.

Before I go into my favorites, let me preface by saying that I don’t think protein powders are absolutely necessary for everyone. As a whole, I think our country consumes more protein than needed. We really only need to consume about 1 gram per kilogram (not pound) of body weight, especially those of us who aren’t professional body builders. I take protein powder on days where I don’t get much protein from other sources and after tough lifting workouts.

That said, here are my faves:

Vegan Protein Powders

 Perfect Fit Protein Powder

From the Tone it Up girls, it’s organic, all natural, brown rice protein powder. It’s also pretty tasty for a vegan protein powder. I use it mostly in protein pancakes, oats, protein bars, and sometimes smoothies

Runner Up: Sun Warrior Vanilla

Whey Protein Powder

 Tera’s Whey in Vanilla

Tasty, mixable, organic protein powder. I use it mostly in shakes. Actually, I only use it for shakes. My favorite whey powder!

Runner Up: Fitmixer in Vanilla Milkshake

This protein is incredibly tasty, and clocks in 32 grams of protein per serving!

BCAA’s

Fitmixer Amino Acids

I love the flavor (tastes like kool-aid!!) and the little caffeine boost in this product! The great amino profile gives my muscles and energy levels a boost during my workout, and help them to recover afterward.

BCAA Runner Up: Modern BCAA

I drink this before and during my workout if I’m going to be working out in the evening, since it does not contain any caffeine. I’ve only tried the blue raspberry flavor, but I love it.

Other protein powders that I’ve tried personally, and like areDesigner Whey’s vanilla protein powder (v. inexpensive!) I’ve heard great things, but haven’t tried myself about the following: Syntrax Nectar, Scivation Whey.

Hope that helps Open-mouthed smile

Protein Bars

NuGo Nutrition in Chocolate Pretzel with Sea Salt

image

One of the best-tasting bars I’ve ever tried, due to the real chocolate coating and mix of sea salt with the sweetness. It gets you 10 grams of protein without any scary ingredients! The organic double bark chocolate is also a yummy flavor!

Runners up: Larabars

Tasty, all natural, very few ingredient fruit & nut bars

Second runner up: Luna Bars

I love this flavor and the white chocolate macadamia flavor! They have a couple more iffy ingredients than the two above and a bit more sugar, but the stats are still pretty decent.

If you have any input on protein powder consumption, or have a protein powder rec not mentioned here, please feel free to write about it in the comments of this post! Smile
