Some thoughts and discussions from me.

Good morning, my friends!

It’s been somewhat of a different week here, as my parents are in Colorado to visit! It’s been over a year since their last visit, so we’ve been taking full advantage by seeing all the sights.

They got in on Tuesday, and yesterday we went to Garden of the Gods, today we’ll be traipsing around Boulder, and tomorrow – it’s back to Breckenridge! Although I was just there last weekend, my parents have never been out that way. Plus, I never mind a trip out west. I think we’ll be hitting up RMNP this weekend.

Actually, this entire month has been pretty crazy for me. With road tripping it to Vail in the first part, Breck last weekend, and my parents being here this week, you could say June has been pretty atypical.

While it’s all exciting and fun, my nutrition and workouts aren’t as they usually are, so I take a few extra measures to make sure I stay flexibly scheduled.

I’ve already shared with you how I shorten and sweeten up my workouts while on the crazy train, but today, let’s talk nutrition.

Tell me: do you have a morning routine? What’s it consist of?

Morning Nutrient InsuranceI’m partnering up with Naked Juice this month for a little help in my morning routine to sneak in extra veggies when I need them the most.

Needless to say, whether I’m the one traveling or I’m the one hosting those who travel, there’s a lot more eating out than usual, more alcohol consumption, less sleep, and decreased veggies.

Travel Tactics for Better Nutrition

Now, I’m not one to throw my entire approach to nutrition to the wayside when my schedule is thrown off, but I do roll with it, don’t feel guilty, and add in some extra practices, such as:

  • Give myself a break (i.e. kick any guilt to the curb)
  • Eat less during the morning/day since I’d typically be eating more in the evening
  • Adding in a greens supplement drink to my morning routine – AKA – drinking my veggies!

When I was in Vail two weekends ago for work, I knew that it would be a super busy day with minimal time to eat anything, let alone a nutrient dense meal. The two hour car drive up was the perfect time to get them in.

Sippin’ and drivin’ and drinking my Bright Beets – 2.5 beets, 1/3 of a carrot, and a pinch of ginger, to be exact!

And then this past weekend while we were in Breckenridge, we threw one of the new Berry Almond Nut Milk bottles in our pack for a more substantial (and delicious) nutrient-packed smoothie as we neared the summit of our hike.

Plus, at that elevation, there was plenty of snow to keep it cold and refreshing 😉 Naked’s new nutmilk packs in 26 blueberries, 8 blackberries, 2 raspberries, 1 strawberry, 24 almonds, 1 3/4 apple, and 3/4 banana – all with 11 grams of protein. Basically, it’s prime hiking fuel packed into a bottle. And a lot easier to carry 😉

Now, making sure you hit those fruit and veggies servings is important at all times – not just when life’s crazy.

When I’m not traveling, I like to think of my morning veggie drink as “nutrient insurance.” You know – as a just in case.  I try to have at least one, if not two servings of veggies with my main meals, but I like to drink a bottle of Kale Blazer or Bright Beets (both new, and each 190 calories or less) after my morning workout (as you know, which is when our glycogen stores need topped off, and when our bodies are most receptive to all of those nutrients!)

I mean, take a look at everything it packs in to 15.2 ounces!

I’m a big proponent of starting your day off on not only a positive and low-stress note, but also priming our bodies by beginning on a healthy note. In addition to quiet time, a walk or a run (depending on the day of the week,) I prime my body with my morning routine by:

  • Drinking warm lemon water
  • Drinking my veggie drink after my run
  • Coffee w/ coconut cream with breakfast (hey, coffee’s antioxidants protect my skin against the sun that I just ran in ;o))

Do you ever drink your veggies?

Do you change up what you do when traveling or when life gets crazy?

What’s your morning routine? (this is a topic I’d like to talk more about in the future!)
