Trading Spin Class for Yoga Practice

Hi all!

Here we are back to Monday. Hopefully my fellow American readers at least have a lighter week this week for Thanksgiving. Although I’ll be working all day on Friday because I’m doing a Black Friday thang (sneak peak – I’ll also be doing a black Friday special with my online training programs on Fri!Winking smile) this is less busy than most. A lot of my clients are out of town for the holiday, and I welcome the extra free time right now.

This weekend provided ample free time, as well! Friday after a morning full of clients, I ran around town getting some errands done – including a random impulse buy of this protein powder:

has anyone tried it before? I think I may have been duped…it doesn’t say it’s organic on their website, and the details surrounding the grass-fed part are kinda sketchy. Not sure! I haven’t tried it yet, but hope it tastes good.

I also got my ears lowered Winking smile

Nothing new – but a good trim feels so good.

Some weekend eats:

Green lettuce w/ a dressing of EVOO+mustard+ACV+s&p, roasted butternut squash, avocado, red onion, cranberries, and chicken

Salmon cakes & avocado slices, sautéed zucchini, mushroom, and onion, & two strips of bacon.

The rest of the weekend went quite nicely, too. I did some shopping, visited with my parents, caught up with some friends over long phone convos – oh! and went to Costco for the first time ever:

Hello huge jars of almond butter, yummy wild caught fish, and grass-fed beef! I usually go to Sam’s Club, but a nearby town recently opened up a Costco, and I’d say it’s like Sam’s Club’s upgrade. Loved it!

This weekend I also did something I haven’t done in a really long time…

I went to yoga class! At an actual yoga studio! I know.

Side story: this yoga class almost did not happen. It was like the yoga gods were NOT on my side. First, I tried to make up the excuse that I waited to late to eat, and now I couldn’t eat before and I would pas out during class (I was fine.) Then, as I was about to leave, I realized I really needed to shave my underarms (tmi?) so I did that. That’s not the problem. The problem came when I tried a new baking soda-based deodorant on freshly shaven pits. Talk about fiery, intense pain in the underarms. I leapt around the house saying “ow! ow! ow!” for about 5 minutes before I sucked it up and left anyway. Guys, I was in serious pain. The picture taken above wasn’t from after the yoga class, but it was from after leaping around in pain. It kinda wore me out! Luckily, the pain magically subsided as I stepped in side the studio. And I smelled good. Winking smile haha

ok, back to my point.

Actually, I’ve decided to trade in my usual Saturday 60 minute class in for a Saturday 75 minute (moderate) yoga class…

In addition to the dietary and supplement changes I’m implementing into my lifestyle to control my PCOS, I’m also changing up my workouts a little bit. Basically, I’m backing off and being less stringent about them. I’m still going to lift and run, but far less of each. More yoga and dog walks, less time/distance bound running and strength-gain focused lifting.

Saturday morning’s yoga class left me on cloud 9 for the rest of the day, and I’m looking forward to more classes just like it.

As far as cardio goes, on Sunday before training a client, I headed to the gym for some treadmill sprints.  Instead of focusing on time or distance bound intervals, I just sprinted until I felt breathless, and then walked until I felt OK.

30 minutes later, I felt like that was enough, and headed home for some breakfast:

I have a feeling this one’s going to be a repeater…as soon as my coconut butter comes in the mail. I grabbed a sample packet, refusing to pay $16 for a jar of it in Naturally Yours. Found it online yesterday morning for $11. Score! (Kind of?)

Time to train some clients. Today is my busiest day of the week – better high tail it outta here!

How was your weekend?

What’s your main focus in your workouts currently?

Right now workout wise my goal is 2 days a week yoga, 2 days a week at the gym which had been walking or light elliptical but I just adding back in a bit of running but very little, like 15 mins worth.

  7. Part of the reason I cut back on my workouts was because of PCOS too. Grr. I finally posted about my diagnosis today :)

I tried to make it to a dance class on Friday and the whole world was against me!!! The bike ride from work to the class was 20 minutes, but it took me 45 because of getting lost multiple times and stupid one-way streets. I got there right as the class was starting, but the nearest spot to lock up my bike was a 10 minute walk away, so I missed the class. It then took me an hour to get home, again because I got lost. I stopped at the grocery store on the way home to pick up a baguette to have with dinner. When I came out, someone had stolen my bike lights (!!!) so I had to ride home in the dark. Scary stuff. Then, as I was turning the corner at a set of traffic lights, my baguette snapped in half. LOL. I can laugh about all this now but at the time I was NOT a happy camper!

  10. For some reason, I have the hardest time getting to yoga classes. It’s weird, because I love yoga and it makes me feel better than any other kind of exercise, but something always tries to get in the way. I feel your pain! Although maybe not your specific armpit pain ;)
I’ve really been trying to even out my workouts lately. I do two spin classes, 1-2 body pump type classes, one yoga class and one pilates class and then try to do extra cardio and strength on lighter days. So far, it feels like it’s going well, but sometimes I crave a sweaty spin class over a pilates class and sometimes vice versa so I try to be flexible.

I’m totally loving running right now. I’m playing it smart though. I only run 3 times a week tops. I don’t want to over train and since I’m loving it so much, I have a feeling it would be easy for me to mentally run everyday.

Love the haircut! You are super cute!

  14. The hair looks amazing! Your eats are looking delicious still, despite the recent changes. Hopefully the changes will be all worth it! Still thinking of you! I’m so glad you’re going to be focusing on more yoga, strength, and relaxation around your workouts! I always try to force myself to go to yoga, but it’s been about 6 months and I haven’t been yet. Oops. I should really just try it out. I still need to try Julie’s noatmeal! It looks super delicious.

  16. Lots to say about this post, but what stands out the most to me is: you train on Sundays?! 7 days a week? Whew – how do you survive? ;) Fun post to read, Paige.

    • Bonnie, I’m not sure why you would assume that. This week I worked out on a Sunday, but I also take 1-2 rest days a week. They just don’t always have to be a on Sunday (though they usually are.)
