My Fitness Synergy Stew

Morning, morning!

I’ve got a WAY busy morning ahead of me, starting in about 15 minutes. I’m talking nonstop client training until about 1:00 this afternoon. Lucky for me I’ve got my breakfast packed an 8 hours of shut eye under my belt.

Perhaps I’ll get a workout in afterward. Perhaps not! We’ll see if I have time. Which brings me to today’s topic…

As a Fitmixer ambassador, each month I receive a topic from the awesome team to write about on the blog. This month, our writing assignment was on creating the perfect synergy stew for fitness.

In other words, what’s my recipe for a complete, balanced, delicious, fitness routine.

You guys know I love working out. I love it so much I made it my job! Yet, believe it or not, it’s not my #1 priority. In fact, I put a few things ahead of getting in a good workout. In order to have a good synergistic effect in my fitness, I need the following ingredients:

My Synergistic Fitness Stew

Serves: 1 happy, fit Paige
Time: a lifetime
Ingredients: Just 7!

Few other life stressors.

image

I say other, because like any other stressful event in life, workouts are stress for our body. Sure, it’s the kind of stress that our body adapts to and then gets healthier and stronger, but it’s stress nonetheless. I will skip a workout(s) if I have a couple other major stressors going on OR if I feel like I’m coming down with something.

Quality sleep.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again: I value sleep more than exercise. It’s so important to get adequate sleep for our bodies to repair its cells (from said workouts) and achieve good hormonal balance. If that’s not in order, an intense workout will make it even worse. If it’s an ongoing thing, then I’ll do something light like an outdoor walk or some moderate yoga.

Sweat.

image

Yep, in order for my fitness stew to be perfect, I need a little sweat. I prefer to add this in through sprints or a heavy leg day or spin class – just 1-3 times a week

Not sweat.

Huh? Wait…

I also need to have workouts where I don’t sweat. Sweat once a day is not a mantra I use. In a lot of my workouts (said walks and yoga class, and even moderate elliptical or bike) I don’t feel the need to sweat. You don’t need to be red-faced and sweaty for it to be a good workout.

Enjoyment.

I love working out, so if I’m not enjoying exercise, I know something is majorly wrong. I make sure to keep the enjoyment factor high by sprinkling in outdoor activity, workouts that challenge me, and group activities.

Time.

This sort of goes along the lines of of ingredient numero uno, but if I a day packed from sun up to sun down, I get way too stressed to try and squeeze in a workout. This is usually a case of "if it happens it happens, if it doesn’t, there’s tomorrow."

Good nutrition.

image

This means not only a good ratio of macros, but enough of them, and with them delivering quality nutrients to my cells.

OK I lied. There’s 8 ingredients. One more, crucial piece to the proverbial fitness puzzle stew:

Coffee.

Always. coffee.

Take all of the ingredients and mix well. Apply to attitude toward fitness and work it out!

  3. Coffee. I couldn’t do a thing without my coffee!

And sleep is something I’m trying to get better about. My bed time is earlier than it used to be… but I don’t mind. :)

    Happy Friday!

  4. I hear ya! Some days the stress of finding time to work out in between all my other tasks is just too much. If I’m stressing to find time to work out, it’s not worth it. There’s always tomorrow! This became a lot easier since I started working out four days a week instead of six, where an unplanned rest day would throw a spanner in the works! I have to make sure I balance out and stressful events with calm activities like yoga and reading to feel 100%.

  9. Coffee and coffee

  10. I would only add quality cuddle time with kids and hubby. Did you know that hugging for a minimum of 7 seconds causes the body to release oxytocin, a feel-good/bonding/happy hormone? Try it! It works wonders!

  11. Your Fitness stew looks very similar to mine! I love that you include sleep, time, and few other life stressors. There are gonna be times in your life when you’re much busier than normal or more stressed out than normal, and it’s perfectly fine to cross off “workout” if it’s just adding stress to your life. The gym will always be there tomorrow or the next day, there’s no point in worrying about it too much!

  12. You have a great list! I think enjoyment is up there for me. I’ve been loving trying new classes at my new gym, and as a result I look forward to going (almost) every day. I also need to stay hydrated, get a decent amount of sleep (always hard for me) and remember to schedule in fun non-working out activities. Sometimes I lose sight of my social life during the winter, which isn’t a good thing.
Hope you have a good day Paige!
