Whoa! What happened?! Yesterday when I woke up it was in the 60’s here in central Illinois, and this morning it’s in the 30’s!! Brr. I’m currently all bundled up in my jammies with a hot cup of coffee – one of the best feelings.
Another one of the best feeling ever? the feeling you get after a really good cardio workout, wouldn’t you agree?
Now that was one really good cardio workout
Sure, strength training leaves you feeling strong and mighty (and hungry) but there’s something about a successful sweat fest that leaves those endorphins soaring. Since I cut my cardio in about half, I relish this feeling!
Yesterday morning I woke up an hour earlier than I intended to, after a fitful night sleep (scary, weird dreams, waking up a lot, etc.) I felt pretty darn sluggish, but I went ahead and got ready for the gym. I had planned on running a few miles on the treadmill this morning, and I still wanted to do that. So I got my amino drink ready, prepped some overnight oats (errr, over-gym trip oats) in the fridge, and laced up my sneakers and headed out.
I told myself I’d run between three and five miles, depending on how I felt. Well, after a 5 minute warm up walk, I started to run, and felt great.
FIVE miles later! I ended up running five (well, probably around 4.5, since I walked 5 minutes for a warm up and then 5 more minutes for a cool down) miles and felt amazing afterward. Runners high = one of the main reasons I run.
And after a shower, I dove spoon-first into my overnight oats:
Apple Cinnamon Overnight Oats:
1/2 c. oats + 1 T. chia seeds + dash of sea salt + cinnamon + slivered almonds, and then 1/2 c. milk, 1/3 c. plain Greek yogurt, vanilla stevia, and 1/2 chopped apple. This was SUCH a good combination. I forsee it in the future very soon
I enjoyed it whilst catching up on some magazines and enjoying (my second) cup of coffee.
I even donned my compression socks! Another thing I’ve been doing for vigorous cardio sessions lasting longer than 40 minutes, is sipping two full glasses of water as soon as I can post-workout:
Throughout my cardio workouts, I usually sip an entire Camelbak full of Fitmixer BCAA’s, but if I don’t sip a decent amount of water afterward, I’ll feel dehydrated the rest of the day.
Other ways I make sure to recover after vigorous cardio:
- Eating a predominantly carbohydrate meal within 30 minutes
- If I sweat a lot, make sure that meal also has a bit of sodium
- Coffee – ever since I read this article
- If high impact, avoid strength training legs same day or within 24 hrs
- Foam roll + stretch
I also just sat and relaxed for a good hour. Lately, my anxiety levels have been on the high side, and (among a couple other things which maybe I’ll get into later) I think it’s because I’ve been so go-go-go lately. I actually have been having to put “call friends back” on my to do list. So it felt nice to just chill and have a minute to myself
Today involves training a few clients, a few hours in the office, and sending out some online training plans. Then, tomorrow, my BFF from college is getting married! Last wedding of the season!
Question: Which feeling do you love more? The one after a good strength or sweat session?
