One of The Best Feelings

Whoa! What happened?! Yesterday when I woke up it was in the 60’s here in central Illinois, and this morning it’s in the 30’s!! Brr. FreezingI’m currently all bundled up in my jammies with a hot cup of coffee – one of the best feelings.

Another one of the best feeling ever?  the feeling you get after a really good cardio workout, wouldn’t you agree?

Now that was one really good cardio workout Winking smile

Sure, strength training leaves you feeling strong and mighty (and hungry) but there’s something about a successful sweat fest that leaves those endorphins soaring. Since I cut my cardio in about half, I relish this feeling!

Yesterday morning I woke up an hour earlier than I intended to, after a fitful night sleep (scary, weird dreams, waking up a lot, etc.) I felt pretty darn sluggish, but I went ahead and got ready for the gym. I had planned on running a few miles on the treadmill this morning, and I still wanted to do that. So I got my amino drink ready, prepped some overnight oats (errr, over-gym trip oats) in the fridge, and laced up my sneakers and headed out.

I told myself I’d run between three and five miles, depending on how I felt. Well, after a 5 minute warm up walk, I started to run, and felt great.

FIVE miles later! I ended up running five (well, probably around 4.5, since I walked 5 minutes for a warm up and then 5 more minutes for a cool down) miles and felt amazing afterward. Runners high = one of the main reasons I run.

And after a shower, I dove spoon-first into my overnight oats:

Apple Cinnamon Overnight Oats:

1/2 c. oats + 1 T. chia seeds + dash of sea salt + cinnamon + slivered almonds, and then 1/2 c. milk, 1/3 c. plain Greek yogurt, vanilla stevia, and 1/2 chopped apple.  This was SUCH a good combination. I forsee it in the future very soon Open-mouthed smile

I enjoyed it whilst catching up on some magazines and enjoying (my second) cup of coffee.

I even donned my compression socks! Another thing I’ve been doing for vigorous cardio sessions lasting longer than 40 minutes, is sipping two full glasses of water as soon as I can post-workout:

Throughout my cardio workouts, I usually sip an entire Camelbak full of Fitmixer BCAA’s, but if I don’t sip a decent amount of water afterward, I’ll feel dehydrated the rest of the day.

Other ways I make sure to recover after vigorous cardio:

  • Eating a predominantly carbohydrate meal within 30 minutes
  • If I sweat a lot, make sure that meal also has a bit of sodium
  • Coffee – ever since I read this article
  • If high impact, avoid strength training legs same day or within 24 hrs
  • Foam roll + stretch

I also just sat and relaxed for a good hour. Lately, my anxiety levels have been on the high side, and (among a couple other things which maybe I’ll get into later) I think it’s because I’ve been so go-go-go lately. I actually have been having to put “call friends back” on my to do list. So it felt nice to just chill and have a minute to myself Smile

Today involves training a few clients, a few hours in the office, and sending out some online training plans. Then, tomorrow, my BFF from college is getting married! Smile Last wedding of the season!

Question: Which feeling do you love more? The one after a good strength or sweat session?

  1. I always feel best after a killer cardio session! I sometimes forget to adequately hydrate after though and can feel drained the rest of the day. I need to try and just chug 2 glasses right after like you do!

  3. Compared to my outdoor run yesterday, this morning’s walk to the gym was a slap in the face. BRRRR.

And nothing beats a good cardio sweat session. Nothing.

  4. This is funny as the exact same thing happened to me yesterday with the weather & the cardio. It was 80 when I went back to work from lunch yesterday & 60 when I left a few hours later. Now it’s in the 40’s, Fall is here! And I did tabata sprints yesterday, I needed a good cardio session, man oh man was I sweaty. Nice work on your run!

  6. I have to say I’m really enjoying this unseasonably warm weather here too in NYC. Today it’s supposed to be 68 degrees for the high! Sometimes I forget next week is November! I also really enjoy starting off my days with oatmeal and coffee and cinnamon is the best for added flavor.

  8. This morning was oddly warm here, but I know that’s about to change soon! That runner’s high is no joke! I’m so glad you got in a good run yesterday! Hopefully that helped with the anxiety. I haven’t blogged this week to kind of give myself a little break. I’m a little annoyed by some things and I really don’t want to be negative so I’ve stayed quiet. If you need to vent, I’m always here!

Have fun at the wedding and enjoy your weekend!

  9. I don’t sweat no matter how much cardio I do (guess I just don’t have the genes for it?), so I’m completely a weightlifting gal! And argggh, one of those abrupt temperature shifts here too–80 and sunny to 50 and rainy? What happened?? Glad you got in a good-feeling run…and now I HAVE to go read about coffee and workouts–more reasons to drink coffee? Sounds good to me :)

  12. I totally agree — nothing like a good sweatfest endorphin rush huh?? I’ve cut my cardio back lately too (partly by choice, partly out of necessity between teaching a ton of classes and a sore knee) and I now cherish my cardio time even more because its fewer and farther between. I kind of like that it’s getting me to step back and really appreciate those cardio highs all the more, a nice side effect yeah?

  16. It’s a toss up for me. When race day is coming up, a good sweat makes me feel like I’ve got it together and am ready to run. When I’m lifting, though, and have those good days when the stars line up and I can see some muscle definition coming in, then I think I want to quit running and start lifting more than the boys at the gym. 😉
Yeah, I’m a sucker for the visual motivation.
