Staying on Track with Healthy Eating–What I Ate Wednesday

The other night, this is what I cooked for dinner:

barbeque chicken, green/yellow beans from this week’s CSA (roasted @425 for 20 mins) – or as Heather told me, they’re wax beans -  and potato wedges

As Shane and I were cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, I found myself over at the stove, eating the leftover potato wedges that we didn’t put on our plates.

"I eat a LOT" I said to Shane and chuckled. "Probably more than you!"

"Yeah, you do, but it’s all healthy stuff!" he said back.

It’s not ALL healthy stuff, but I do tend to stay on track with healthy eating, and follow the 80/20 principle. I find that sticking with this principle – without over thinking it too much – keeps my healthy eating balanced.

Yes, I try not to overeat at each meal and snack, and I when I eat them, one of my main goals is making them healthy, but I’ll also have a couple French martini’s now and then and follow it up with splitting some white chocolate bread pudding for dessert.

And afterward? I don’t feel as though I’ve "fallen off the wagon" or my eating has gone to crap, so I might as well let the rest of the day’s eats be unhealthy, too. I enjoy the indulgence, and move on to the next healthy choice.

Of course, everyone feels food guilt from time to time (myself included) but I find that if I fully enjoy my indulgences, I can keep a fairly good balance of healthy eats/indulgences, or 80/20…ish

Take yesterday’s eats, for example:

Breakfast:

1/2 c. oatmeal (I finally had an oatmeal craving! so I went with it) + 1 c. almond/coconut milk w/ PB and Greek yogurt, 3 egg whites w/ sea salt and nutritional yeast

My Cookie Dough Healthy Bites order from Lindsay came the other day, and they definitely live up to the hype. I popped two or three of ‘em about an hour before lunch.

Lunch:

(Leftover) barbeque chicken w/ spinach and tomato in a tortilla, leftover green/yellow beans, apple

Plus some green tea a little after lunch.

Snack:

carrots + homemade guacamole

homemade pizza – this crust + pizza sauce, spinach, tomato, jalepeno, horizon mozzarella, sausage from the farmer’s market and a side salad of spinach, tomatoes, + organic ranch

Shane picked up a carton of our favorite kind on Sunday, so I’ve been having ice cream about every other night for dessert. Some nights I want a little something sweet after dessert, and sometimes not.

Side note: I told my mom the other day  that ice cream is probably my favorite food, and she said, “I know! I can tell from your blog!” And I say, “…is it that obvious?!” and she’s like:

Workouts:

4.75 mile interval run (before breakfast,) quick chest/triceps workout (before lunch)….plus about a 10 minute jog while I had my running gait analyzed.

More on this contraption after I get the analysis back!

I’d say that’s about 80/20, right? Perhaps maybe like 75/25? Winking smile I’ll call it good.

  5. I try to follow 80/20 too. I think it is the best balance so that you eat lots of good for you food but still get your treats so you are depriving yourself. This summer I think it went to more 60/40 for me some days but am now getting back on track before Christmas season when it might fall there again!

  6. Haha, I realized the other day how much more I eat than Tony! It kind of scared me, but when I said it to him, he commented back that I eat A LOT of salad volume. It’s true, but still, it’s strange when you eat so much more than your volume than a man! I’m a clean eater and rarely stray from it. I use to have a HUGE frozen yogurt addiction, but since I can’t have dairy that is no longer the case. I have become crazy addicted to my protein cakes lately, but that’s a healthy cheat. I know, I’m the weird girl that always eats clean. I think you do a great job Paige! I think a healthy balance is a great thing, which I know you have!

  7. YAY for healthy bites! Aren’t they amazing little bites of goodness? My husband adores the chocolate chip flavor!!

    Funny that you are writing about the 80/20 rule when I just read about it from Tina’s perspective too, LOVE both of your takes on it, and of course I’m with you on the rule itself, on staying mindful but not being so strict that I ever feel deprived. Life is all about balance and good choices right??

  8. I try to implement the 80/20 rule but some days are maybe more of a 75/25. But I agree that if I have a treat I dont feel like I have fallen off the band wagon. Some days I can’t help but feel bad about things I have eaten but I think that is just part of life.

  10. I try to stay 80/20 everyday, but sometimes it’s more like 100/0 and then I end up the next day doing 50/50 by accident because I deprived myself. No bueno. I try to make sure I have some sort of treat everyday or else I go nuts. The 80/20 rule is a great rule for a reason.

  13. I think it all pretty much evens out, especially for us that are health conscious. I need to get into the 80/20 rule. I’m still a little too strict on myself. I’m definitely a volume eater, so I feel like I eat waaay more than my guy friends ha ha. Oh well.

  14. It all does even out. 80/20 is my rule but there are days when it’s more or less. You just get over it and move on when you overindulge. I’m not going to beat myself up over it. I’m digging that sleepy tea right now too!

  17. Looks like a totally healthy, balanced day to me! I definitely struggled in the past, getting trapped in the “well I ate all that ice cream anyway so I may as well eat….etc etc”. It’s definitely true that you need to fully enjoy the indulgence, and then move on from it, don’t dwell on it!

  18. Had to tell you that my Mom tried a new pizza crust recipe: 1 cup Greek yogurt + 1cup self rising flour. That’s it. It needs to be kneaded quite a bit, but pop that in a KitchenAid and your good to go!

    She said it was good! Let me know if you try it.

  19. I try to stick to the 80/20 as well. I know that some days are much better than others but as long as I do my best to eat foods that make me feel good then I don’t really stress about it.
