First FDA-Approved Diet Pill in 13 Years–Thoughts on That Thursday

This week I heard something on Good Morning America and, subsequently, read on various news websites about the latest diet pill, Qysimia to hit the shelves. It’s the weight loss pill to be approved by the FDA in 13 years.

Unfortunately, I have a history with diet pill. When I went through my disordered eating phase (or, not eating) in my early high school years, I tried them out – and witnessed their terrible side effects – for myself. When I heard about the FDA approving this weight loss pill to be prescribed to the public, I immediately thought that I had to discuss this with you all.

Tell me: your thoughts?

What do you think about the FDA approving Qsymia?

  1. My first instinct is to say that it all comes back to diet and exercise- there are no quick fixes. But as a health professional, I’ve unfortunately seen my fair share of people where that’s not enough. It’s nice to know there are other options besides surgery (or giving up) for these people, but it still really makes me worry. There are serious side effects with drugs, and there’s always the potential for abuse/misuse.

  2. I’m a late adopter when it comes to meds and pills and such. I prefer to let things be around for 10 years so they start understanding long term effects a bit better before I’ll try it out. Pills scare me a little.

  3. I think this is horrible! I think diet pills are a cope out for people who don’t want to put in the work for proper diet and exercise. I will be the first to admit I tried diet pills as a fast way to loose weight but never got too far into them because they sort of scared me. I can’t see this as a good idea for society, especially young girls!

  4. Diet pills make me extremely uncomfortable. I’ve taken way more of them than I’d like to admit, including some with ephedrine that I had to go to ridiculous lengths to find. None of them worked, and I just don’t believe that there will ever be a pill that does. It takes hard work, and people need to stop looking for a quick fix.

  5. I have to agree with you! I think if these pills do come available I think they need to be combined with healthy lifestyle education! I think you are right that everyone is looking for a quick fix when there isn’t one! I understand that some people have more weight to loose than others but why not put the money spent into creating this pill into nutrition or exercise education instead! I’m all for preventative measures over solving the problem once it’s at its worst!

    • Me too, Danielle! And I guess popping a pill once a day takes far less effort than putting in the effort in the gym. Sad!

  6. I’m going to preface this with the fact that I’ve never used a diet pill in my life, nor have I known anyone that has. I do have a friend that is obese that recently did the lap band surgery due to the fact that she is having horrible problems with her hips (now needed hip replacement) and she could never seem to get the weight off with her attempts at dieting. The funny thing is that she is now losing weight, which tells me that she probably was not following those plans properly (like WW). Anyway, she still is not exercising and she has had no guidance from any physicians that performed this procedure to exercise at all. To me, meds for weightless are for money, not your health. I think these are choices that people make and while I’m against this (for the same reasons you are), our health seems to be more about making money and business than it is for our well being as a society.

  7. This is so frustrating! I think that people need to be educated on diet and exercise first. There are so many side effects and it can effect your health in so many other ways… plus there is no quick fix! The minute they come off the pills, they will gain the weight back if they don’t make changes to their daily habits. I wish they would come out with more preventative measures rather than offering a pill for weight loss! If they are going to offer that, I think that it needs to be coupled with meeting with a dietician for a diet plan and getting an exercise program started.

  8. I don’t know anything about this pill but I don’t like diet pills it is the wrong way to fix the problem. That said if it was being used to help someone in urgent need of weight loss to QuickStart their program and they were under the close supervision of a doctor then it might be ok. However, I feel like it is more likely to be pharmaceutical companies cashing in on the obesity epidemic.
