My Secret Snacking

OK, that title could be misleading – I’m not talking about sneaking food. I don’t do that. Never. Wait, do you count slivering off the teeensiest sliver of yet another piece of zucchini bread before putting it back in the fridge? Good, me neither.

On the blog, I show you guys various meals that I’ve made and eaten. You see breakfast the most often, mostly because I like to talk about my workouts a lot, and breakfast comes next. Then I also post about dinner successes, and subsequent recipes, from time to time, like the tequila lime shrimp one from the other night. And if you follow me on Instagram or facebook, you’ll even see lunch from time to time!

But what you don’t see hardly ever, aside from the rare WIAW post, is? SNACKS. Snacky snack snacks. And I eat them. A lot – usually three times a day, in fact!

So today I thought I’d show you just that – what I’ve been snacking on lately Open-mouthed smile

Every once in a while, I’ll have a snack in between breakfast and lunch, and if I do, 99.999% of the time it’s fruit, and 80% of the time, that fruit is an apple.

I freaking love apples. They’re like the most perfect on the go snack – am I right or am I right? Coming in second (lately, anyway) is pineapple, followed by peaches. For some reason, all berries and bananas are typically reserved to being eaten with my breakfast. Not sure I know why, just that my taste buds prefer it that way.

Second snack comes between lunch and dinner. This one I never skip, mainly because lunch and dinner are often 6+ hours apart. For this one, I’ll go with a few different options…

Protein shake:

Another apple or banana (oops…not just during breakfast I guess) + peanut butter or almond butter, trail mix, or veggies and hummus.

banana, meet peanut butter jar

And I wouldn’t really consider BCAA drinks to be a snack, but sometimes if I have a break in my afternoon clients, I’ll hop on the elliptical and sip on some of my Fitmixer aminos (fyi:affiliate link) for a little afternoon energy boost.

(I think the banana in the PB jar combo is behind it, too! haha)

I rarely have anything else but one of the combos above.

Snack #3 comes about two hours after dinner, and I’d say I it only happens about 70% of the time – and usually in the form of:

Greek yogurt + frozen berries. I have this combo most often. It’s sweet, fairly healthy, and I love it with a little almond butter.

Except the other night I added THESE DEVLISH GOODIES:

Gah. I got these the other day when I was hungry and at the grocery store. Bad, bad, fabulous idea.

Ice cream:

This ice cream is THE best ice cream you can buy in a carton. Shane and I go through a carton in about 5 days. It’s crazy.

Sometimes I just need something a wee bit sweet to end the day on, and sometime just a piece of chocolate will do it for me. Can you tell I have a sweet tooth? Me? Nahhh

Can wine be considered a snack?

Sometimes I’ll have wine after dinner instead (or with) a snack.

Finally, we have the bites, nibbles, and extras snacks. These tend to come after lunch if I’m in the kitchen wandering around, or right before dinner. This is usually more snacking out of bordom, or random hunger, and I’ll likely grab what’s closest.

Vanilla Cupcake Goldfish above (when they’re gone, they’re gone…I’m swearing to it!) veggies, or fruit that’s in the fridge,

Mini bags of Kettlecorn:

A finger dipped in almond butter, a sliver of whatever bread I’ve baked that week,

I am THE worst at filling up with chips and salsa/guac while dinner is cooking. Especially if I’m cooking anything Mexican-related because that gives me an even bigger excuse to bust out the chips and salsa.

Another one – especially with all the new delicious flavors – that I’ll munch on while dinner’s cooking.

Dried fruit:

So there ya have it! My “secret” snacking habits!

I better get scootin’. My morning schedule is CHOCK full of clients. It’s a busy one ‘round here! Then it’s time for some weekend trip funSmile

When do you snack most often?

What are some of your secret snacks?

  8. I always eat a morning and afternoon snack – especially during the work week. Sometimes we eat supper later like 7:30pm so not always is there a bedtime snack but lately there has been dark chocolate and berries every night too!

  9. My goodness girl, I can’t believe you JUST found those delicious, addicting, amazing goldfish! I had to stop buying them because I could never just stop at one serving.

My snacks revolve around apples/pb, cereal, fruit. Kinda boring now that i’m writing it down. ohhh how could i forget.. chips and salsa almost every saturday night.

  10. I could be a major grazer if I let myself – just a bite here and a bite there. I know that’s not always a bad thing, but I can over do it. I try to have a snack between breakfast and lunch then one before dinner and often after dinner. I like Greek yogurt with blueberries or just a bit of PB or part of a ThinkThin bar maybe. My sweet treat is a plain rice cake with PB2 that I mix with vanilla stevia. And wine? Isn’t that just a staple??? 😉

  11. between breakfast and lunch I almost always have an apple for snack! I need to get my hands on those goldfish grahams!

  12. I’ve been known to throw a banana into a PB jar – best thing ever. I can’t wait for apples to come in season so I can pick my own and eat them all the time in everything (apple butter, apple chips, apple crisp :)

  15. I love snacks! I couldn’t get through the day without them. Most of the time I’ll have a snack mid morning between breakfast and lunch, and then again mid afternoon between lunchand dinner. I usually will have something a little sweet after dinner like a piece of dark chocolate or a small bowl of ice cream too.

  16. I’m definitely a “pre-dinner snacker” as well. If I’m ravenous, chips and hummus come out often. It’s pretty bad – I always end up filling up before dinner.

  17. I’m a massive snacker – I don’t usually show snacks on my blog because I’d never get pictures of them all!

Some of my favourites: baby carrots and hummus, pretzels, tortilla chips, flavoured greek yogurt, and (of course) chocolate.

  18. Those vanilla cupcake Goldfish sound glorious! I try to avoid the aisle that they’re in at Target, but I may have to take a peek because those sound too go to resist.

I usually have a snack in between lunch & dinner, & always have dessert after dinner which I suppose I could count as a snack!

  19. I find that snacking for me can sometimes be a slippery slope, esp. if I am at home. One snack leads to another, and another… gah! If I am out and bring predetermined snacks I am fine. Actually, yesterday when I was at Target I was absolutely starving and didn’t bring my apple (absolutely love apples too – need at least one a day if not two)… Anyway, I ended up buying an apple from Target to tide me over. It was so tempting to get some other kind of not very nutritious snack but I was happy that I didn’t because once I took the hunger edge off I realized that an apple was really all that I wanted. I have to admit though, when I am shopping, it’s soooo hard not to want to buy stuff that’s new (i.e. new flavors of bars or treats). I try to limit it though because I know it can get out of hand. I won’t even buy any “cat” cookies from Trader Joes anymore because I know I go through the bin way too quickly. I guess my favorite snacks apart from fruit, are individual sized packs because they force me to stick to one serving size. It’s kind of funny, a friend of mine posted a quote on her FB page the other day: Fruit is Fast Food. This isn’t my friend’s posting because it’s on her FB page, but I found it pinned here:

  20. Such great snacks! I have to try that ice cream (cookies n cream is my favorite!). And wine is my favorite snack!

  29. I LOVE me some snacks!! I am so glad you partake in them :) I often eat a lot of oatmeal (plain, instant packets) mixed with PB when I am t work.. it just holds me over so well, I can’t resist. My after dinner snack is always some sort of concoction mixed with who knows what, on whatever blog I read that day that inspired me, ha. I love microwaving “muffin” things lately. I cannot buy goldfish- I eat the whole bag in one sitting!

  30. Wine is absolutely a snack! :)

I snack most at night and I think it’s more out of habit and/or boredom than anything else…Though sometimes I realize my calorie intake is a bit lower during the day than it should be – which inevitably makes me ravenous by night. I’m trying to add more healthy snacks in during the to combat this. Thanks for all the healthy snack ideas!
