Evening Energy & a Lower Body Blast Workout

Last night I did something I haven’t done in…well, in enough time that I can’t even remember the last time.

I went to the gym in the evening! On a Sunday at that.

Yesterday during the day, I met my parents in Peoria for a little shopping and late lunch, and when I got back home I realized I forgot to hang up some Memorial Day signs at the gym. Since I had to go there anyway, I figured I’d get in a little workout while at it.

Along with doing – and filming – a biceps workout for a post next week, I did the following lower body workout:

Barbell Back Squat – 10 reps with barbell safely across the fleshy part of the upper back, press hips back and bend knees into a squat. Straighten legs and push hips forward to come back up.

complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30-45 seconds between each set

Straight-legged Dead Lift – 10 reps – in a standing position with a neutral spin and braced abs, slowly lower barbell down, pressing hips back, until your flexibility allows, then flexing the glutes and hamstrings, come back up to a standing position.

complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30-45 seconds between each set

Stability Ball Hamstring Curl – 10 reps – lying supine, with heels on ball and arms by your sides, squeeze the glutes and hamstrings until your hips lift off the ground, with your legs, bring the ball in close to the hips, then extend the legs back out to starting position.

Power Squat Jump – 10 reps – sit back into a squat. Instead of standing back into starting position, power up into a jump, landing softly onto the toes before going right back into the jump again.

perform these two exercises as a superset, performing 1 set of the curls, then 1 set of the squat jumps. Rest 30-45 seconds between each superset

Plank Ups – 10 reps – starting in a forearm plank position, slowly bring the right palm to the ground and press up into a high plank. Lower back down on same side to go back to a forearm plank. That’s one rep. Switch sides and repeat.

Stability Ball Jackknife – 10 reps – starting in a high plank position with shins on a stability ball, flex at the hips and use the abs to roll the ball toward you. Hold, then extend back to starting position.

perform these two exercises as a superset, completing 1 set of the plank ups, then 1 of the jackknifes. Rest 30-45 seconds and repeat.

I got done with the workout in about 35 minutes, but then I ran into a former client and chatted with her for another half hour, then did the aforementioned biceps workout. Shane told me he thought I got lost when I got home! (haha)

Anyway, I kinda liked working out in the evening. When it comes to cardio, I’d much rather do it in the morning. I have more energy then, plus I get all sweaty and a shower in the morning just makes more sense. And I’m not one of those people who likes to take multiple showers in a day Smile with tongue out

For some reason I had so much energy during this workout. Perhaps it was my pre-workout fuel? Winking smile

After shopping and eating with my parents, I spotted a new-to-me frozen yogurt shop right on the way home. Of course, I had to stop and try it out. I went with yellow cake, red velvet, and cookies and cream with minimal toppings. I’m more of an ice cream flavor girl than a toppings girl – blasphemous, I know. This variety had spot on flavors, but the texture wasn’t up to par. Either way, it’s better than the sole froyo shop here in Normal.

In addition to the mall (where some damage was done at Banana Republic) we hit up Sam’s so my mom could get some fruit, and I picked up some Kettle corn:

I wasn’t lying when I told you guys Shane and I have a serious kettle corn addiction – and a huge box of little bags of it in the basement! haha

This morning has been pretty relaxing. After a solid 9 hour sleep, I took Niko for an already-too-warm walk, and now am sitting down to some coffee and breakfast:

Cold oats on the hot, hot morning sounded fabulous.

As for the rest of the day, it’s kind of all over the place. I don’t have any gym hours, but I still scheduled some clients who wanted to work out on the holiday since we’re leaving for Colorado this week. This house also needs a good scrub down, so I’m hoping to get to that, too.

Hope you are all having a great weekend (if it’s still the weekend for ya – and if it isn’t, hope it’s a great Monday!)

What time of day do you prefer to do weights? Cardio?

What food are you obsessed with lately?

  1. That froyo (<– your fave word!) looks yummy!

I am going to the gym this evening which I never do, but I have been stuck inside doing homework the past 2 days. I am okay with it though because like you said yesterday, it is Africa hot up in this mug :)

I prefer to workout in the morning too because I do not like showering multiple times a day and, let's face it, the longer I put it off the less likely it will actually happen.

Hope you had a great weekend :)

  4. I love your shoes!! I prefer to work out in the morning too, but with my schedule I can’t until night. And that workout looks great, barbell squats are my favorite…I’ll have to try this out!

I prefer workouts in the morning, and like Kimberly, if I put off weights until later, they won’t get done.

  6. I have way more energy and motivation early in the morning, so I’d rather do workouts then. I will very rarely workout at night. I prefer a mixture of the two! Circuit workouts are definitely my favourite. Hope you enjoy your memorial day!

  7. Popcorn is addicting period. Jealous of that wonderful box of heaven.

  9. I most definitely enjoy doing my weights in the morning! :) It seems like if I don’t do it in the morning I just won’t do it 😉

  10. I rarely workout in the evenings either – mostly because my stomach bothers me if I’ve eaten before working out, even if I wait hours after a meal. But I sometimes can handle weights in the evening, just no cardio!
